Book Review: The Purpose Driven Life Expanded Edition: What on Earth am I Here for? by Rick Warren

Expanded edition is amazingly a bit of an underachiever name for the 10th anniversary updated edition of The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth am I Here for? by Rick Warren. it should be more like the encyclopedic edition of living a life along God’s 5 purposes.

Having read Purpose Driven Life 10 years ago, I was eager to see what was expanded from 10 years ago. What initially caught my eye were the 2 additional chapters, days 41 and 42 that looked at 2 traps to purpose driven living. One looked at the Envy Trap: I must be like you to be happy. The other looked at The People-Pleaser Trap: I must be liked by you to be happy. Both chapters are solid additions to the original book.

Yet the best part of the 10th anniversary edition is the extra resources the book provides. Each day access is given to a 3 minute video on the chapter and a 30-45 minute audio message. Yes, that’s 42 videos / 42 audios. A 40 day adventure now provides an encyclopedia of purpose driven living.

The new edition is for a new generation, I found it valuable as part of the original generation of Purpose Driven Life readers. My church not only read the book but used the small group materials for Purpose Driven Life. Of all the “big rock” events we have done, this one still rates as the highest. That potential is even greater with the enhanced 10th anniversary edition with over a thousand Bible verses to dig into as well as a daily question and weekly small group questions in the back of the book. In addition Rick invites readers to a purpose driven web site to continue the conversation, and even more continue the application of living out a purpose driven life.

In answering the question, “What on earth am I here for?” Rick Warren not only provides a divine overview, but a personal journey. The truths he shares from building from God’s Word and the 5 purposes God has for one’s life provides a universal perspective and one unique to each reader. That’s part of the joy of the journey in reading a chapter a day for 42 days.

The original edition 10 years ago became the best selling nonfiction hardback in history, the 10th edition is even better! I highly recommend this book. The first edition was 5 out of 5, this one is 5 plus.

Thanks to and Zondervan for providing a free copy to read and review. I wasn’t required to give a positive review, just an honest one. Thanks Rick for taking a great book and making it even greater!
