Wayne Coredeiro writes from his heart. He shares the good, the not so good, and the path that Jesus takes us to be great in Him. That’s why I loved reading Jesus Pure & Simple. Wayne peels back the extras we have added to Jesus over the years, how we shape Him in our image instead of being shaped in His. Wayne reveals this by revealing Jesus work in his own life and helping to discover Jesus work in our own.
Jesus Pure & Simple invites the reader to take a step back from the busyness of life, to be open and honest in our relationship, to get back to Jesus and best of all to discover the new life He brings. Getting back to Jesus is the purpose of the book. Wayne does this by looking at various stories from Jesus life and applying their truth to life today. The issue may be avoiding the Christian subculture that skews the Biblical view of Jesus, or discovering the joy of hidden service, or the power and strength of contentment. Throughout there is the power of Jesus Pure & Simple, the power of His story in scripture and of experiencing His transforming presence in life.
There are great quotes throughout out like, “Being right doesn’t give us the right to denounce in judgment. It instead gives us the authority to impart mercy.”
There are great practices to discover as in my favorite chapter, chapter 6 as Wayne talks about Mary and Martha and “One Thing”. He does a great job of working through applying spiritual practices in every day living. As one who has begun to journal, I was renewed in that practice as I was reminded a journal is not about simply recording the events of a day (that would be a diary), but in reflecting on their meaning and the lessons Jesus is teaching throughout the day. Such insight gave greater focus to my journal entry for the day and the days that have followed.
As is Wayne’s style, there is humor, there is transparency. Wayne writes not as one who gets all things right, but who in the midst of mistakes, stumbles and even failure, has learned to see Jesus Pure & Simple, and to be renewed and redirected by Him.
I give Jesus Pure & Simple 5 out of 5 stars. It was a great devotional read. For those in small groups, there are questions at the end of each chapter which would make this book a good small group study. In a world that pulls us in many directions, Jesus Pure & Simple provides a path to go God’s way.
My thanks to Bethany House for providing a free copy to review. I was not required to give a positive review, I found Jesus Pure & Simple to be an uplifting read and encourage you to find your focus on Christ and follow the path of faith that He leads.
