Christians would readily claim that the Bible is our book of faith. Most Americans recognize that the Bible has great authority. Yet just 2 out of 5 Americans have read the whole Bible.. It’s one thing I guess to say it’s relevant, it’s another to ready it every day.
Unstuck by Arnie Cole and Michael Ross helps the 3 out of 5 get unstuck in not only reading the Bible, but even more engaging the Bible. Unstuck is not just for the 3 out of 5 who have never read through the Bible, but also the 2 out of 5 that have and want to learn more.
In helping its readers to get unstuck in engaging the Bible (and the author write out of their own experience of being oblivious to the Bible, stuck in not reading, and then becoming unstuck to engage the Bible in their lives), they have 3 main parts to the book:
1. They face the problems of reading/engaging the Bible or why we stall out.
The authors answer the question: If the Bible is so life changing, why aren’t we tapping into it? Part of the answer flows out of busy, worn out directionless faith. Another part is not engaging what is read, instead ending up lost and confused.
Most stop their Bible reading at this point, and here’s why to continue to move on to Bible engagement as their research shows — “our lives are dramatically different when we’re engaged with Scripture 4 or more times a week.” Personal experience has shown me the same.
2. They look at what works to engage the Bible or the powered by 4 solution.
They call this process empowered by 4:
a) Spending time with God.
b) Getting refreshed through His Word.
c) Being recharged through the Bible.
d) Having a meaningful two-way connection with God.
3. They chart a plan that works! Engage, untangle … grow!
Their goal is to help readers to engage the Bible to explore timeless truths, discover hope, tap into wisdom, overcome temptation, and find and fulfill our life’s purpose. They do this through a 45 day plan to engage the Bible that features Bible verses to read and questions to consider. They provide the plan in the book and on their website unstuck.gotandem.com.
I appreciated how Cole and Ross spoke of their failures and their faithfulness. Real life examples of what worked and what didn’t work. I loved at the end of each chapter how they provided a stat research revealed, an encouraging nudge, and practical plan of spiritual stepping stones.
They helped me understand my goal is not merely to read the Word, but to engage in dialogue with its Author. The Bible is not merely a story of long ago, but of God’s work still today. They taught me to not only encourage people to read God’s Word, but engage that Word in their daily life.
I give Unstuck 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend it for those who find themselves challenged by reading the Bible or going through the motions in their daily reading. Unstuck helps get your life focused on God’s design and the real change the Holy Spirit desires to bring to transform our lives.
I received a copy of Unstuck free from Bethany House to review. I was not required to give a positive review, I simply enjoyed what I read and learned along the way.
