This week’s Soul Food quote comes from one of my favorite books, John Ortberg’s book about Peter walking on the water from Matthew 14. The quote is also the book’s title, “If you want to walk on water, you’ve got to get out of the boat.”
Thanks to the leaders of Community Lutheran Church of Escondido for having me as part of their recent leader’s retreat to “Get out of the Boat” and re-introduced me to this great book.
The book is not about looking for a guest shot on Fear Factor or the next X-Games, but stepping out in faith to where Jesus is and where He calls us to go.
The best move Peter made was to get out of the boat, to get where Jesus is and where Jesus invites him to come.
After reading this book, I made my first trip to India and a number of other mission trips that got me out of my comfortable boat potato comfort and taking tentative steps of faith out on the water with Jesus. What looked like I was walking into a storm of uncertainty became a life revealing moment of God’s hand at work. In other words, I am strong believer in getting out of the boat. Where is He calling you to join Him out on the water?
